Corneal Stem Cell Transplantation and Limbal Reconstruction Performed for the First Time in the World by Specialists

With the efforts of the ophthalmology group and the Translational Ophthalmology Research Center of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, corneal stem cell transplantation and limbal reconstruction were performed for the first time in the world at Farabi Hospital.

Dr. Seyed Farzad Mohammadi, a faculty member of the ophthalmology department and the head of the Translational Ophthalmology Research Center at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, who performed the surgery, said about this transplant: "One of the most challenging clinical scenarios that ophthalmologists face is the loss of the biological properties and characteristics of the eye’s surface. This surface is considered a highly complex biological tissue and may fail due to congenital diseases, eye injuries, or various other reasons. In such cases, there is a need for the transplantation of limbal stem cell-containing layers of the eye’s surface. Currently, the process of harvesting and transplanting this highly specialized and delicate layer from the donor's eyeball, which is a complex procedure, has been performed for the first time in the world at Farabi Hospital.
