Successful Corneal Sensory Nerve Graft (Corneal Neurotization) Performed for the First Time in Iran at Farabi Hospital

With the collaboration of a team of ophthalmologists and neurosurgeons from Tehran and Guilan University of Medical Sciences, the first-ever corneal sensory nerve graft (Corneal Neurotization) surgery in Iran was successfully performed at Farabi Hospital.

The procedure was conducted on a patient with a history of brain tumor surgery and optic nerve dysfunction affecting the eye's surface. During the surgery, a section of the patient's leg nerve was extracted by a neurosurgeon, prepared, and then grafted onto the cornea by cornea and oculoplastic specialists.

Notably, this surgery does not require a donor, as the nerve is taken from the patient’s own leg, making it a groundbreaking step in regenerative ophthalmology in Iran.
